Dogear is a reading app. It keeps what it needs to be one, and nothing it does not. We do not sell your data, we do not show advertising, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.
What we keep
- Your account — your email address, the handle and name you choose, and a picture if you add one. If you sign in with Apple and use Apple’s private relay address, that relay address is all we ever see.
- Your reading — the books on your shelves, the pages you log, your reviews and ratings, and the days you read. Some of this you can hide from other readers in Settings; hiding it hides it from everywhere, not just your profile.
- What you write — posts, replies, club messages, questions and chat in live rooms.
- Clubs and events — which clubs you are in, which talks you have a seat at, and who was in a room.
- Orders — if you buy a signed copy, the delivery address you give and the status of the order. Card details are handled by Stripe and never reach us.
- Sign-in attempts — the address tried and the network it came from, kept briefly, so we can slow down somebody guessing passwords.
Your voice
Live rooms carry audio, and sometimes video and a shared screen, through LiveKit. That stream is live: it is not stored unless the room is being recorded, and when a room is recorded the app says so before you join. Recordings go to the host of that room and to nobody else.
Who else is involved
- Railway — hosting and the database.
- LiveKit — carrying the audio and video in live rooms.
- Open Library — where book covers and details come from. Searching for a book sends the words you typed there; it is not told who typed them.
- Resend — sending confirmation and password emails.
- Stripe — payments, if you buy something.
- Apple and Google — only if you choose to sign in with them.
What we never do
We do not use your reading, your posts or your voice to train machine-learning models, and we do not give them to anybody who does.
Taking it away
You can delete your account from Settings, in the app or on the website. It happens straight away: your posts, shelves, reviews, messages and sessions go, clubs you organise are closed, and rooms you hosted are left without a host rather than deleted, so the people who attended keep their record of the evening. Some things are kept because they are somebody else’s record too — an order somebody has to ship, for instance. Write to us if you want to know exactly what remains.
